Commissioners say the $300,000 investment is great for the county.
Washington County Commissioners Charles Kent, Steve Joiner, and Tray Hawkins were on the scene early Monday morning when county personnel started the process of reclaiming a number of the County’s asphalt roads.
The commissioners said the old asphalt roads throughout the county will be prioritized and scheduled for repair over the coming months, but Bahoma Road (off the Campbellton Highway) was the first on the list.
“It is costly to run,” said Joiner. “But, we didn’t buy it to just look at it. We’re going to use it.”
Commissioner Kent, who stayed on site to watch the entire process as Bahoma Road was reworked, said the new piece of equipment will make a major difference in keeping the county asphalt roads in good condition.
The county’s newest piece of equipment is currently in place on a 5-year lease with Washington County able to purchase the piece of equipment at the end of that time. It digs down to the dirt level of the asphalt roads reworking the material in the roadway and is followed by equipment that repacks the asphalt providing a much better driving surface.
All three of the commissioners said they feel those using the reworked rods will see a major difference in the condition of travel for those using the roads, as well as the wear and tear on vehicles.
