2018 is off to a great start! It’s been a busy January for Volunteer Florida and I’m thrilled to fill you in on what we’ve been up to. Keep reading for some exciting updates!
Volunteer Florida Commission and Foundation Board Meeting
Earlier this week, the Volunteer Florida Commission and Foundation Board met in Tallahassee for its quarterly meeting. As part of the meeting, we participated in a site visit at the Leon County Emergency Operations Center, received presentations from Volunteer Florida grantees, and even heard from Governor Scott who called into the meeting.
Volunteer Florida Commissioners
Commissioners and Foundation Board members also received presentations from Volunteer Florida staff members who spoke about their experiences during Hurricane Irma response. This was a highlight of the meeting!
We are grateful to our board members and commissioners who volunteer their time to #ServeFL!
Legislative Visits
While in town for quarterly meetings, Volunteer Florida Commissioners, along with Volunteer Florida leadership, participated in legislative meetings at the Capitol. We were able to meet with House Speaker Richard Corcoran, Senate Majority Leader Wilton Simpson, Senator Dennis Baxley, and many other key staff members in the Florida House and Senate.
We were grateful for the opportunity to educate lawmakers about Volunteer Florida’s impact and the excellent work our grantees are doing in communities across the state.

Black History Month
Volunteer Florida is thrilled to support Governor Scott’s 2018 Black History Month contests for Florida students and educators! Each year the Governor hosts an art, essay, and educator contest and awards to honor Florida’s African-American Heritage during Black History Month in February.
Art and essay contests are open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students, parents, teachers and principals have also been invited to nominate full-time educators at the elementary, middle and high school level for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award. Three student essay contest winners will receive a 4-Year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.
Volunteer Florida is grateful for the generosity of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and our incredible sponsors. To learn more about the Governor’s 2018 Black History Month art, essay, and educator contests, please visit this link.
