What Floridians Need to Know Before You Vote

The Destin Library will host an informational presentation on the Florida Constitutional Revision Commission (CRC) and proposed constitutional amendments on Thursday, March 15th, at 6:00 PM. The presentation will be conducted by Protect Florida Democracy, a project of the Florida Bar Association. The program will be approximately 90 minutes in length and will include a question and answer period. This program is free and open to the public.

Every 20 years the Florida constitution requires the convening of a Constitutional Revision Commission to review the state constitution in its entirety and propose changes to the voters. This year on November 6th, 2018, Florida voters will be asked to decide on newly offered amendments to the state constitution from the CRC as well as those put forward through other means authorized by the Florida Constitution.

Amendments to the state constitution that are approved by the voters will impact every resident of Florida for the next 20 years. Citizens of all ages are therefore urged to get involved and become aware of proposals being put forth.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Interested citizens are encouraged to arrive early for this presentation.

Support SB 1256 and Protect Our Right to Privacy

SB 1256 will be heard in the Senate Rules Committee meeting on Thursday, February 22nd, 2018.

SB 1256 by Senator Jeff Brandes (R) D-24 would protect citizens’ expectation of privacy in the use of their cell phones and microphone-enabled household devices, such as the Amazon Echo and Google Home.

As technology advances and becomes part of everyday life, such as smart phones, tablets and household devices like Amazon Echo, it is critical that law enforcement recognize that electronic devices are the modern-day equivalent of papers and effects protected by the Florida Constitution in conforming with the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

SB 1256 would require law enforcement to obtain a warrant in order to search communications and location data contained in these devices. SB 1256 makes it clear that collection by law enforcement of an individual’s location, a cell phone, or a home enabled device, without the consent of the person or owner of the devices, should be allowed only when authorized by a warrant, unless certain exigent circumstances exist.

SB 1256 will be heard in the Senate Rules Committee meeting on Thursday February 22nd, 2018.

HB7055 expands transparency and

options for Florida students and teachers

Tallahassee, FL – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL) is cheering on legislative leaders who stood boldly to pass an innovative education reform bill. HB7055 creates the Hope Scholarship, which allows alternative education options for victims of bullying and harassment across Florida. It promotes worker freedom by creating more accountability and transparency requirements for government unions. Finally, it makes permanent the Principal Autonomy Pilot Program and increases the number of schools that benefit from increased administrative flexibility.
