Washington County Board of County Commissioners held one of their shortest meetings Thursday morning, but did address the following agenda items:

  •  Approved the required 3-year Non-discrimination Policy update needed to continue receiving Federal dollars through the Florida Department of Transportation.  No changes were made.

  •  Approved requested computer upgrades for the Washington County Library System.

  •  Approved a two-story addition to the Rock of Deliverance Church, 5414 Obies Street in the Town of Ebro.  The addition will be at the west end of the church and will be 29 feet in height.  The first-floor addition is for expansion of the Fellowship Hall.  The second-floor addition is for offices and classrooms for Sunday School.

  • Approved submission of paperwork for Rural and State Grants of the E911 and Dispatch Center.

  • Approved signing an updated memo of understanding with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity due to some boundary changes.

  • Approved the Washington County Logistics Plan 2018 to include an emergency staging area in Wausau.

Praising volunteers with the Ebro Fire Department,  Commission Chair Tray Hawkins made a motion, approved by the Board, to re-instate that fire department as eligible for County funding.  Hawkins said the department now has three certified volunteer firefighters.

Commissioners also approved Fire Coordinator Rick Kerr applying for a Fire Prevention and Safety grant offered through the US Department of Homeland Security for the purchase of a Fire Safety House to assist county volunteers with educating Washington County’s youth on fire prevention and escape.

In a separate action, commissioners were informed the County had received around $215,000 from the recent sale of Road and Bridge Department equipment at auction.  Commissioners then approved the purchase of an excavator.

Before closing the meeting commissioners praised county department heads for becoming more proactive, rather than reactive, in their various duties.
