Wausau will recognize March 29th as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

In a 5-0 vote, Thursday night Wausau Town Council members voted to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to construct a new community center/Possum Palace.
Members of the Wausau Advisory Task Force met with Fred Fox of Fred Fox Enterprises, Inc. prior to the Council meeting to discuss eligible projects/activities they would like to see included in the application process and recommended the community center project as a Neighborhood Revitalization Project at the council meeting that followed.
Fox said Wausau would be competing with other communities for funding, but were in a good place because it has been five years since the Wausau received any CDBG grant funds.
The Town Council will now start pulling together the information/details required for the grant application.
In other business addressed during the meeting council members took the following actions:
- Approved payment of Town bills.
- Approved Fire Department minutes and training records.
- Approved bank statements.
- Accepted the resignation of Recreation Director Alyssa Jackson who announced her pregnancy. She also announced that the town had only signed up enough ballplayers for two girls’ teams. She said boys from Wausau will be playing ball with the Vernon teams.
- Appointed Joy Hall as Interim Recreation Director through Sept. 30, 2018.
- Approved the RFP submitted by Travis Hall to place an internet tower on the Town’s water tower. (This was the only RFP received.)
- Received an offender update from Teen Court. Officials were told that the cases are still active.
- Approved a Memorandum of Agreement with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity declaring Wausau as an Area of Economic Concern.
- Discussed a possible ordinance restricting sex offenders from living in Wausau. However, in final action, the council members decided not to proceed with such an ordinance, but continue following the requirements of the Florida Statutes. Council members said there are currently seven sexual offenders residing within the town limits and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department checks on them regularly.
- Announced the Town Hall will be closed March 29th in observance of Good Friday and the Public Works Department will be closed March 30th in observation of Good Friday.
