Young people filled the meeting room at the Chipley Library Thursday afternoon to hear from and talk with Mike Thomin of the Public Archeology Network.

The inquisitive young people were asking questions of Thomin long before his actual presentation got underway.

Describing archeology as the study of past people and their cultures through what they left behind, Thomin led his listeners through how archeologists do their jobs and what they seek to accomplish.   Thomin also touched on the roles of paleontology and geology in the study of the past.

Asked where archaeologists work, Thomin said “just about anywhere”  – above ground, below ground, and underwater, but added that they spend most of their time in laboratories studying what they have collected.

Thomin pointed out that the Chipley Library has a number of books on archaeology and encouraged the young people to read about the subject in which they are so interested.

Before closing the program the young people were given the opportunity to create clay jewelry similar to what ancient people of this area might have created.
