It can make a difference in someone’s life.

For Ed Gines, Senior Solutions Specialist at Elder Care, no one day looks alike. And after meeting Mr. Rollins, this couldn’t have rung more true. Their meeting set off a several-month-long journey that included the efforts of the entire community.Late last September, Mr. Rollins was living out of his van in an area state park with his best friend Daisy. He was in need of hospitalization & surgery that required a lengthy stay in a rehabilitation facility, but he wouldn’t enter the facility without assurances from Ed that Daisy would be well cared for.

Big Wheels Deliver Meals

On Monday, March 12th, Elder Care Services hosted Big Wheels Deliver Meals.  This annual event raises awareness about the nutritional health and welfare of home-bound seniors in our community.  Local and state representatives, along with business and community leaders, gathered together to participate in a powerful day of direct service.

Every year, Elder Care Services’ delivers over 160,000 hot, nutritious meals to seniors in Leon County.  This is made possible largely by generous donors and compassionate volunteers, who provide over 13,000 volunteer hours to support this critical service.  These volunteers bring vital nutrition and a friendly face to seniors throughout Tallahassee.  They also provide daily health checks to ensure the safety of the senior.

Through Meals on Wheels, seniors get more than a hot nutritious meal, they get a chance to interact socially with someone from the community. During Big Wheels Deliver Meals, local “Big Wheels” will take over for the day delivering meals and meeting the seniors served.  Meals on Wheels volunteers are sometimes the only person the senior sees during the day.  To be surprised by a local dignitary, athlete or TV personality is always an exciting treat.

This year over 30 community members took part in this special day. This day of service always inspires and moves the hearts of all who participate, and this year was no different.

Elder Care Welcomes Two New Board Members

Left: Dr. Maribel U. Lockwood, MD; Right: Jodi Wilkof
Elder Care Services welcomes two new outstanding community members to the Board of Directors.

Dr. Maribel Lockwood graduated from the University of Panama School of Medicine, and completed residencies both in Panama and in the United States. Dr. Lockwood performed her U.S. residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Florida Urban Campus in Jacksonville, Florida; she subsequently completed a fellowship in Women’s Imaging there. Dr. Lockwood also completed a research fellowship in Abdominal Imaging at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. She has co-authored scientific papers that have been published in Radiographics and The Radiologist medical journals, and has received awards from the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Lockwood joined Radiology Associates in 2000 and her special interest is in women’s imaging.

Jodi Wilkof received a BS degree in Business and a BS degree in Political Science – both from Florida State University – and a JD degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.  Following law school, Jodi served as a law clerk to several judges, including Justice Barbara Pariente of the Supreme Court of Florida. While she enjoyed working as an attorney, Jodi found that she also loved planning parties and events, and she did this often in her spare time. Jodi realized that not everyone has that kind of time or enjoys that type of work as much as she does – that is how the idea of Green Party Events was born. When not planning events, Jodi can be found tending to her garden (which enjoys much of the compost generated by Green Party Events’ event waste!), walking with friends, and volunteering at her son’s school.  She is a news junkie, and also loves the hunt for a good bargain, vegetarian restaurants, and Railroad Square.
