Started in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run was created by Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon to help law enforcement be active in the community and support Special Olympics Kansas.

Washington County, Florida Law Enforcement agencies have participated in the event each year, and on Monday, April 2, 2018, residents in Chipley will saw members from several law enforcement and correctional agencies participate in the Torch Run, which started at 9AM at the Washington County Courthouse and progressing along Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 77 and finished at Peoples South Bank just north of I-10, as seen in these photos by Real Florida Media, a subsidiary of The Goulding Agency in Chipley, Florida..

Florida Panhandle Technical College’s Brandon Stevenson heads up the Law Enforcement program and was happy with the turnout.

‘It’s great to see these agencies participate, with the added value of the public seeing the law enforcement and corrections community engaged in this charitable work’, said Stevenson.

Arguably one of the largest Law Enforcement and Corrections schools in the region, Florida Panhandle Technical College has always participates in the event and this year it was mandatory for all students to be a part of the event.

Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into Opening Ceremonies of local competitions.

Martha Compton, Director of Florida Panhandle Technical College says, ‘We are grateful that our law enforcement community comes together for this event each year, and we are proud as a school to participate’.
