Authors Lori and Brenden O’Gara (shown at the right) were guest speakers at the Thursday’s Friends of the Library meeting hosted at the First Methodist Church in Chipley.
Lori, who writes contemporary fiction and started her writing career in 2011, told those at the meeting to always read what speaks to their hearts.
Brenden, author of a “kid’s cookbook”, said the characters in his book are based on friends he knew in his early teenage years. His book tells the story of a king sending out someone to find the best recipes in his land.
Lori O’Gara admits she is happiest with her feet in the sugar white sand on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. She grew up on Perdido Key, Florida. She currently resides with her childhood sweetheart and their children just a few miles from where the couple grew up. The O’Gara clan is often at the beach enjoying the waves and sun.
Lori will be the first to admit that she is addicted to books. She doesn’t always read what is on the bestseller list. She likes romance novels with a magical spin and memoirs about everyday people. Lori’s literary philosophy is simple. “Read what you like. If you can’t read through the first couple of chapters without your mind wandering to other things in your life or if you dread having to finish it, then throw it out the front door. Read what speaks to your heart.”
Lori holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Writing from the University of West Florida. Also, she earned a master’s degree from Florida State University in Library and Information Science. Currently, she is editing her third novel in the Perdido key series and writing the first in a high fantasy series about dragon lore. She is also the librarian at the public library in Navarre, Florida.
During the business portion of Thursday’s meeting, Friends President Pat Dickson welcomed members and guests and reminded those in attendance “Live one day at a time – God will take care of you tomorrow as well”.
Friends’ members were reminded of the April 12th ‘Game Night’ being hosted by the group at the First Methodist Church in Chipley. Tickets are $10 each and will be available at the door beginning at 6 p.m. Refreshments and door prizes will be available.
