Washington County Historical Society President Dorothy Odom announced Friday that a new telecommunications tower will be erected in the Caryville area and Historical Society input was being requested.
Referring to a letter from Dynamic Environmental Associates, Inc., Odom said the proposed project will consist of a 310-foot tall self-supported tower and associated equipment and will be located at 4173 Douglas Ferry Road in the Caryville area. She said the Historical Society notification is required by the National Historic Preservation Act to determine if there would be any historic resources that might be affected by the project.
Members of the Historical Society knew of no reasons the tower shouldn’t be located at the proposed site.
Discussing other issues, Odom announced that the Historical Society had been bequeathed $4,000 from the estate of Mildred Farrior.
Odom also reported that the Historical Society did not receive grant monies to fund a Walking Tour app that had been proposed. However, she said a printed walking tour of the downtown area could still be developed and said more information on this opportunity would be presented to the membership at a later date.
Odom was also proud to show off the new Southern Bell Telephone exhibit now being displayed at the Historical Society Museum in Historic Downtown Chipley. A portion of the exhibit had been in storage but was recently moved into the museum for public display.
The Historical Society meets at the museum (located at the old train depot in Chipley) for a covered-dish lunch at Noon on the first Friday of each month.
Anyone interested in joining the Historical Society is invited to attend the meeting/luncheon and learn more about what is being done to preserve the history of Washington County.
