Wednesday’s meeting of the Washington County Board of County Commissioners was all about handling county business, with a small portion of the meeting devoted to promoting the upcoming 2018 Relay For Life event being held in Chipley.

Along with signing a proclamation declaring April 23rd – 27th Paint the County Purple Week, commissioners encouraged county residents to participate in the April 27th Relay event being held at Pal’s Park from 6 p.m. until midnight next Friday.

Pictured at right – Washington County Commissioners, joined by event lead Jody Bush, urged locals to attend the ‘Relay’ and find out if any of the commissioners will model the bra being displayed here.

This year’s teams are celebrating by pointing out what cancer cannot do   …..

  •  It cannot cripple love.
  •  It cannot shater hope.
  •  It cannot corrode faith.
  •  It cannot eat away peace.
  •  It cannot destroy confidence.
  •  It cannot kill friendship.
  •  It cannot shut out memories.
  •  It cannot silence courage.
  •  It cannot reduce eternal life.
  •  It cannot quench the Spirit.

Dealing with county business at Wednesday’s meeting Washington County commissioners took the following actions:

  •  Received notice that the City of Vernon had voted to turn the library in that community over to the County.
  •  Approved a request from Property Appraiser Gil Carter that his department be allowed to waiver annual filing requirements for certain property tax exemptions.  Carter said the Florida Consitution provides an additional property tax exemption to persons 65 years of age and older who receive a homestead exemption and whose annual household income does not exceed $20,000.  He said approximately 550 senior property owners in Washington County currently receive the additional exemption, but some fail to re-apply annually.  Allowing the automatic renewal of the Senior Exemption will reduce confusion and reluctance on the senior’s part and improved efficiency on the Appraiser’s part.
  •  Approved final completion of the Kirkland Road Closeout.
  •  Reappointed Roger Dale Hagan and David Morris to the Washington County Planning Commission.
  •  Approved a revision to the county’s Personnel Policy regarding unused sick leave accrued.  The wording of the proposed policy will be reviewed at the BOCC’s April 26th meeting.
  • Heard from property owners on Twin Pond Road regarding damage from road water runoff into a pond on their land.  The issue was referred to the County Administrator for his review.
  •  Heard from another county resident requesting that property taxes be raised on undeveloped land.
  •  Was informed by County Attorney Matthew Fuqua that he is developing an ordinance simplifying the sale of county-owned land.  He said he is seeing if the County can just advertise available land on their website, rather than having to advertise in a print media.
