Extremely Hazardous Substances / HazMat Information Available to the Public
The West Florida Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) collects and maintains information on extremely hazardous chemicals manufactured, transported, and stored throughout facilities in Northwest Florida. The LEPC also makes this information available to first responders and the public.
The LEPCs were created by the Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA), under SARA Title III. The LEPCs develop and maintain a hazardous materials emergency plan for the region, facilitate training and exercise opportunities for first responders (public and private sector), and act as a resource to the public regarding chemicals located in the community. Other resources include briefings on known chemicals in proximity to a community, facility, and/or public place, as well as, training on sheltering and evacuating.
The West Florida LEPC meets quarterly to discuss new developments in the hazmat sphere including: changes in legislation; new response training opportunities; assessment of the needs and capabilities in Northwest Florida; and planning for potential incidents in the region. For more information on EPCRA, please visit www.epa.gov/epcra.
The West Florida LEPC serves Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes, Washington, and Bay counties. Members of the public who wish to obtain any information in accordance with EPCRA may do so through the West Florida Regional Planning Council located at 4081 E. Olive Rd., Suite A, Pensacola, Fla. The West Florida LEPC Coordinator may be reached locally at 850-332-7976; toll free at 800-226-8914; or at www.wfrpc.org/lepc.
The West Florida Local Emergency Planning Committee is staffed by the West Florida Regional Planning Council, a regional entity providing professional technical assistance, planning, coordinating, and advisory services to local governments, state and federal agencies, and the public to preserve and enhance the quality of life in northwest Florida.# # # |
