Students recognized at Washington County School Board meeting …………

Three groups of young people were recognized during Monday night’s meeting of the Washington County School Board.

Amvets Awards on Americanism were awarded to the following students – Roulhac Middle School … Grace Futch, Kaylen Lent, Kalya M. Koch and Parker Smelcer; and Vernon Middle School …  Destiny Gregory, Abbigall Burch, Kenya Campbell, Courtney Jackson, Marissa Rodriguez, Alaina Perkins, Jerryd Brown, Valarie Holley and Allie Walters

 

AVID Presentations were made to Maria Gonzalez, a 7th-grade AVID student, who participated int he Student Speaker Competition Contest for AVID; Henry David, a 6th-grade AVID student, recipient of the Golden Binder Award; and Cami Brown, an 8th-grade AVID student will share the 2018 Gator Encounter Experience.

 

Chipley High School Band Recognitions were given out by Band Director Richard Davenport as he praised the young people for their ranking as “Superior” at state level competition.

 

School Board members were also approached about adjusting beginning school hours in the public school system.  It was recommended the change be made to starting school classes at 8:30 a.m. in order to given young people more sleep time.  It was pointed out that tests by the American Pediatric Association report that adolescents need 8 to 10 hours of sleep at night.  The speaker said the move would help reach the school system’s goal of empowering students.  No action was taken by the board members accepted the information presented for their review.

 

In separate action board members again discussed the proposed teacher Graduate Tuition Reimbursement Program that has been looked at for the past few months.  Board members are looking at a number of options and Monday night turned the information over to the School Board Attorney for his review and presentation back to the board.

 

Board members also made mention of enacting a one-half center sales tax but wanted more information before deciding if it will go on this year’s ballot, or if they will wait for two years.

 

The decision was made to advertise for Custodial Bids.  Board members were told the current three-year contract is ending and they are required to advertise for custodial bids.

 

In final action board members set two 4 p.m. Workshops – one on May 29th and the other on May 31st.

  •  CHS Physics Out-of-State travel to Farley Nuclear Plant in Dothan on May 28

 

  • Washington County School district Food Defense Plan

 

  • WCSD Level II Principal Preparation Program

 

  •  Revised job description for the Assistant Director of Finance

 

  •  Revised Job description for the Director of Assessment and Accountability

 

  •  Revised job description for the Director of Curriculum and Instruction

 

  •  Instructional personnel recommendations for the various county schools for 2018-2019

 

  •  List of summer school teachers
