Washington County young people will ultimately be the beneficiaries of this week’s donation by the Chipley Kiwanis Club to the ‘Summer Read’ program being hosted by the county’s library system.

Washington County Library Director Enae Rountree was present at Tuesday’s Kiwanis Club meeting to accept the club’s donation.  Rountree thanked the Kiwanians for their commitment to the young people of their community.

Washington County School Superintendent Joe Taylor brought the Kiwanians up to date on end-of-the-year activities planned at the county’s various public schools.

Beth Arnold, from the District School Board office, was also on hand to update club members regarding the new school being developed on the campus of Roulhac Middle School.

The new alternative school campus is being established to provide services to students previously served at the Hope School in Jackson County.

Arnold said while only eight of the ten Washington County students being served at Hope are expected to be enrolled at the new facility, at least 35 students are expected to be enrolled at the new facility when the 2018-19 school year begins.  She said parents of a number of special needs children are inquiring about enrolling their children at the new school.

Arnold said the new school is attracting the attention of parents of special needs children who live in Holmes or Jackson counties but work in Chipley.
