UWF Summer Archaeology Field Lab Volunteer Opportunities
|
|
This summer, the University of West Florida’s Division of Anthropology and Archaeology is offering a unique opportunity for members of the public to volunteer in the on-site field lab at the 1559 Tristán de Luna land settlement site in Pensacola, Florida, and at the Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site in Milton, Florida! Volunteers will learn what it takes to work in an archaeological lab and have a chance to chat with archaeologists, learn more about these fascinating archaeological sites, and be a part of a community effort to explore local history. |
Volunteer days at the Luna site are: June 7, June 12, June 14, June 21, June 26, July 10, and July 23. Call the UWF Archaeology Lab today at 850.474.2087 to learn more about availability and to reserve your spot. Space is limited on each volunteer day, so be sure to call soon! UWF will maintain a waiting list and contact people should additional space become available.
Volunteer days at the Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site will be held on June 6 and June 13. Volunteers can join for as long or as little as they wish between 10:00am and 2:00pm; no RSVP required! |

New Exhibit at our Destination Archaeology Resource Center
Attempts to explore the history and life of the enslaved community at Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site in Milton, Florida, has been ongoing since 2012. Only fleeting snapshots of daily life have been documented within historical records, so understanding community life of the enslaved at Arcadia is largely left to archaeological investigations. Join us for the opening of a new exhibit on this research on Friday, July 20th from 6:00-9:00pm at the FPAN Coordinating Center, 207 E Main Street, Pensacola, FL 32502. |

Sorna (left) has been working with FPAN’s Mike Thomin (right) to assess heritage tourism in northwest Florida. With AIMS, Sorna will continue her work by conducting a Feasibility Study to explore the potential for the Florida Panhandle to become a National Heritage Area. |
