The rideOn team was invited to present on the opportunities and challenges of rural mobility at the 2018 Florida Commuter Transportation Summit in Tallahassee, Fla. on May 8-9. The Summit is held annually to provide innovative strategies in transportation demand management and to demonstrate the successes of multi-modal transportation systems. RideOn provides access to carpooling, vanpooling, and other modes of transportation that improve workforce recruitment, retention, and reliability; providing cost-savings and efficiency benefits for employees and employers alike. TPO staff presented to the Milton City Council on May 8, regarding the upcoming Corridor Management Plan (CMP) on Berryhill Road. The purpose of a corridor management plan is to identify operational and safety improvements needed to support all modes of transportation including bicycle and pedestrian movements as well as roadway capacity. The limits of the study are from Locklin Technical School (just west of Anderson Lane) to Dogwood Drive. This project is scheduled to begin in July 2018. Olive Road Phase One

Escambia County hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of Olive Road East Phase One, and a groundbreaking ceremony for Olive Road East Phase Two on May 9.
The completed Olive Road project will improve the roadway condition, provide pedestrian sidewalks and bike paths, improve safety, and resolve drainage issues along Olive Road from Palafox Street to the current Johnson Avenue intersection. Construction began in March 2015 and the planned completion date for Phase Two is June 2020, pending any delays due to weather, utility conflicts, changes, or other unforeseen issues.

City, County, and State Joint Transportation Roundtable Meeting Held in Crestview |

On May 3, citizens, elected officials, members of law enforcement, and transportation experts from various agencies gathered for a joint City, County, and State Transportation Roundtable Meeting at Warrior’s Hall in Crestview.
Those in attendance included State Representative Mel Ponder, State Representative Jayer Williamson, Senator Don Gaetz, City of Crestview Mayor David Cadle, City of Crestview City Council President J.B. Whitten, City of Crestview Councilman Joe Blocker, City of Crestview Attorney Ben Holley, Okaloosa County Commission Chairman Graham Fountain, Okaloosa County Commissioner Nathan Boyles, Okaloosa County Administrator John Hofstad, Okaloosa Assistant County Administrator Kay Godwin, Okaloosa County Clerk of Court J.D. Peacock, Okaloosa County Public Works Director Jason Autrey, FDOT District 3 Director Jared Perdue, City of Laurel Hill Councilman Scott Moneypenny, Eglin Air Force Base Chief, Portfolio Optimization, Jeff Fanto, Okaloosa County Sheriffs Deputies and more.
Several action items were undertaken in this cooperative and uplifting joint meeting. WFRPC Executive Director, Austin Mount, and Transportation Manager, Mary Beth Washnock were in attendance and presented an update from the Okaloosa-Walton Transportation Planning Organization. |

Northwest Florida Estuary Program Workshop |

On April 25, Holly Greening, CoastWise Partners, shared her experiences and cautionary tales from the Tampa Bay National Estuary Program at the Northwest Florida Estuary Program Workshop at the Emerald Coast Convention Center in Fort Walton Beach. Breakout activities and a Sunshine Law question and answer session were held. Elected officials and stakeholders from all three estuary areas—Pensacola and Perdido, Choctawhatchee, and St. Andrews Bays—were in attendance. |

The West Florida Local Emergency Planning Committee assisted with providing funding for the 160 hour Hybrid Tech Course hosted both online and in-person at the Ocean City-Wright Fire Control District in Fort Walton Beach. Sessions were held in February and April. The instructors provide a more hands-on approach than the traditional 160-hour courses resulting in higher achievement rates. This is the second consecutive year that the West Florida region has conducted the course. Both years yielded a 100 percent completion rate. |

Bay Day Celebrated in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties |

Bay Day Santa Rosa County (SRC) 2018 was held at Russel Harbor Landing Park along Blackwater River in Milton on May 17. Fifteen organizations volunteered time to engage students with environmental education activities. Fifth graders from Bagdad, Jay, and Rhodes elementary schools, joined a group of home-schooled students for the activities. Together, nearly 300 students were in attendance. May 17 was also National Outdoor Classroom Day, so the Bay Day SRC students had a double observance at their local event.
Escambia County Bay Day will be held June 19, 2018, from 1-3 p.m. at Ebonwood Community Center, located at 3511 West Scott Street in Pensacola. Vendors are required to present hands-on science activities to students ages five to 15 at Learn, Play, Grow Summer Camp at Ebonwood Community Center.
