As my first week as CEO comes to a close, I want to introduce myself and tell you about my calling to serve Florida. I’ll also share my leadership values, and explain how I’ll ensure the success of both Volunteer Florida and you, our partners.
I’m proud to be a sixth-generation Floridian with deep roots in the state. I loved growing up here, and I can remember, even as a young child, thinking that I never wanted to leave. That’s one of the many reasons why I went to the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and the Florida State University College of Law.
While I’ve held a variety of positions in public service, most recently, I served as the Chief of Staff at the Florida Lottery. During the last fiscal year, $1.7 billion was transferred to support education in Florida. These funds were appropriated to the state’s K-12 budget, as well as the Bright Futures Scholarship, which helped send thousands of deserving high school seniors to college.
I’ve dedicated my life to Florida, the state that I call home, working in public service for almost 20 years. Regardless of the organization, I adhere to four values in the workplace and always instill them in my staff. They are:
- Develop our team. We’ll do all that we can to work together, continually improve, and allow the organization to achieve its full potential.
- Use our resources wisely. We’ll use our limited resources efficiently and effectively in order to fulfill the organization’s mission.
- Do the right thing, every time. We’ll operate ethically and transparently, understanding our statewide impact and the value of our partners’ trust.
- Lead the heart of Florida. We’ll aim to be leaders that develop and inspire other leaders in Florida.
I look forward to working with you to serve this great state.
Yours In Service,
David R. Mica, Jr.
