Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews and School Superintendent Joe Taylor brought their teams together this past week to better protect Washington County students who start back to school this week.

Taylor said the training sessions were beneficial to all concerned – giving the various law enforcement agencies that would be responding to emergency situations an opportunity to learn about the school layouts before an emergency arises.
Asked about some parental concerns, both Taylor and Crews stressed that the active shooter training sessions held at Vernon High School and Chipley High School this week were not in response to any threat, but mandated by the State as a precautionary measure to protect students.
Speaking to the teachers, Crews noted that it is important that they work in conjunction with law enforcement and share any information of concern they might obtain. “We want to hear from you,” said Crews, adding, “Talk with your school resource officer when something comes to your attention.”
Both Crews and Taylor expressed their appreciation to the numerous law enforcement agencies that participated in this week’s sessions, commenting, “They now have a better insight as to the layouts when they come on campus and our educators have a better knowledge regarding what will happen.”
