Attorney General Bondi’s Weekly Briefing
Many Florida students are heading back to school – marking the start of a new academic year. This can be an exciting time for students. It can also be a stressful time. Students often feel pressure to fit in. Competition over grades or athletics can compound this stress. Add peer pressure to the mix, and even great students may make some reckless decisions.Sadly, just one mistake can ruin a child’s future or end their life. We are in the midst of a national opioid crisis claiming lives in Florida. Deadly fentanyl is being mixed with other drugs and pressed into pill form, leaving users unsure about what they are taking. Using just once can result in death or a lifetime of addiction.
These drugs are being sold on our streets and even at school. Unassuming students can be pressured or tricked into taking a dangerous opioid. Parents should remain vigilant and talk openly and regularly with their child about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol.
I am asking all parents of school-aged children to please talk to your students about drug use. Tell them to never take a pill from anyone they do not know—not even an aspirin (because it could be laced with deadly fentanyl).
Stay involved in your child’s life, know their friends and review their social media accounts. Being active in their life may save them from addiction or worse. |
