Washington County Commissioner Todd Abbott has sponsored many events, organizations and charities in the area over the past eight years, during which time he has served Washington County as fiscal watchdog, this year helping to institute policies which will make the county debt-free for the first time in many years.
On Saturday, August 11, 2018, Abbott again had the opportunity to give back to the community, as the Chipley Kiwanis Club held their inaugural Gala Soiree, an evening of food, dancing and festivities, a new fundraiser that has replaced the successful annual Kiwanis Dinner Theater.
By all accounts, although attended by a very small crowd, the event was considered successful, catered by the brand new Chipley High School Culinary Program.
Multiple regional football tournaments, inclusive of Vernon and Chipley High Schools, at least a couple of ‘Back to School’ giveaway events, the annual ‘Evening of Gospel Music’ at the Spanish Trail Playhouse and several other private events conspired to thin the crowd most likely to support the Kiwanis event, but as an inaugural event, success was obvious.
In excess of a dozen couples enjoyed the Washington County Ag Center, artistically decorated, and as mentioned by one attendee, ‘Sometimes it’s not about making a lot of money or generating a big crowd, but just having fun’.
