High School Football is King in the South, and stories about the sport, coaches and players always rank high in viewership.
However, on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, this publication exceeded all previous daily and weekly web site viewership records when our readers tuned in to learn more about the controversy at Vernon, Florida High School.
On that day, our viewers visited our web site over 12,000 times, viewing over 20,000 pages in that interim, driven in large part by the football story, and for the balance of this week has continued to drive huge interest in the story, with over 50,000 page views.
As reported, Freeport, Florida High School made the decision to pay the Vernon school a fine of $2,500 to cancel this Friday’s (August 24, 2018) football game, the season opener between the two teams and originally scheduled to be played on the Vernon campus.
The genesis of the story was the accusation of player recruitment, illegal by FHSAA standards, by Freeport officials. Citing ‘scheduling conflicts’, Freeport officials came to the agreement to pay the fine instead of playing against Vernon, as reported by Vernon Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Gerald Tranquille, who recently visited ‘Real Florida Magazine’ to discuss the upcoming football season.
