Panama City, FL – Gulf Coast State College is excited to announce that the Cybersecurity program recently won the Local Partnerships Award in the second annual Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Award Program from the National CyberWatch Center. Five categories were selected to help educators approach and teach the complex subjects of Cybersecurity including Curriculum, Faculty Development, Lab Activity, Local Partnerships and Student Learning Aid.
GCSC received the Local Partnerships award for the event “Guiding Girl Scouts through a Computer Science Journey.” More than 100 Girl Scouts attended the event held at the Advanced Technology Center, and they could relate to the college students who could be their older sisters. The scouts were able to watch members of Corps Tigris, the Cybersecurity student organization, as they operated and handled complex technology while displaying their leadership skills.
“I always wanted to be a role model that I would have appreciated when I was younger,” said Kat Murphy, Cybersecurity student and team captain of Corps Tigris. “We taught them about online safety, cyberbullying and other STEM related subjects. It’s good for them to learn from other women and I’m proud to have the opportunity to inspire them.”
“These winning submissions show that the education sector continues to deliver much needed creativity in solving some of the country’s biggest information security related challenges, and highlights the important coordination role the National CyberWatch Center plays at national level,” said Casey O’Brien, Director of National CyberWatch Center.
