FPAN Public Archaeology Lab Opens to Volunteers
|
|
The Florida Public Archaeology Network’s Public Archaeology has opened its doors to volunteers who want to get hands-on with local history and archaeology! Volunteers work in our air-conditioned laboratory to help the University of West Florida begin the process of sorting through artifacts collected during recent excavations in our area. No experience is needed; all volunteers receive training from a professional archaeologist on our staff! Our volunteer program is geared toward students who need volunteer hours for scholarships, individuals and groups |
interested in a unique way to experience local history and archaeology, as well as everyone who has dreamed of participating in real archaeological work.
The FPAN Public Archaeology Lab will be open on most Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00am-4:00pm, through December 12. Volunteers are not required to commit to more than one day at a time and can stay for as little or as long as desired during open days. For more information, e-mail Nicole Grinnan at ngrinnan@uwf.edu. |

Celebrate Local History at St. Michael’s Cemetery
|
|
People who have walked the streets of Pensacola have likely stumbled upon historic St. Michael’s Cemetery, tucked away at 6 North Alcaniz Street. As one of the oldest cemeteries in the state of Florida, St. Michael’s Cemetery is an outdoor museum that showcases over 200 years of the city’s dynamic development!
To help celebrate the past, present, and future of our beautiful area, join organizations from across the community at the Historic St. Michael’s Cemetery Celebration and Crinum Lily Sale on September 22 from 10:00am-2:00pm! |
Educational organizations, University of West Florida students, and local non-profits will be on hand with fun presentations and activities for visitors! Jamaica crinum lily bulbs from heirloom plants in the cemetery will also be available for a donation to the cemetery. This free, family-friendly event will also feature live music and food from the Two Birds Street Food truck!
Lily bulbs will also be available for sale on September 15 from 9:00am-2:00pm at the Palafox Market in Pensacola. |

FPAN’s Brings Underwater Archaeology Training Program to Saipan
This summer, FPAN underwater archaeologists Dr. Della Scott-Ireton and Nicole Grinnan traveled to Saipan in partnership with East Carolina University (ECU) and the Task Force Dagger Foundation to conduct a training program for retired Special Operations Forces veterans. These veterans learned methods and techniques in underwater archaeology and were able to assist ECU with identifying potential World War II airplane wrecks for the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). FPAN is honored to have participated in the project and looks forward to continuing this work! |
