Bill and Jacquie Witt, resident managers at The Armsrong House, were the guest speakers at this week’s meeting of the Chipley Kiwanis Club and updated members on the role the shelter plays in the local community.

The Witt’s said their job comes down to “helping reach the community with the gospel of Jesus Christ by providing temporary, emergency shelter to those in need”.  Their mission is to provide comfort, encouragement, and temporary housing; however, they added that  The Armstrong House doesn’t provide hot meals or counseling to those taking shelter at the facility located at 1461 S. Railroad Avenue in Chipley.

The Armstrong House has seven furnished apartments for those seeking shelter, as well as a Food Pantry that operates from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday for eligible participants.

The Witts said the Care & Share Food Pantry is supported by many of the local churches, organizations and individuals in the Washington County community.

The Witts also distributed a  ‘Projects and Wish List’ for those wanting to donate labor and/or materials.  That list includes the following:

  •  Replacing carpeting and vinyl with wood laminate or vinyl flooring in two apartments.
  •  Bathroom and shower work needed in nine apartments.
  •  Replacement of window screens in ten apartments.
  •  Replacement of ceiling fans with light kit in the living rooms and bedrooms in seven apartments.
  •  A new mini-fridge in one apartment.
  •  Replacement of microwaves in two apartments.
  •  Picnic tables or other outdoor furniture for client visitation.
  •  One apartment needs to be gutted and refit for persons with disabilities.
  •  Battery operated hedge trimmed.
  •  Battery operated leaf blower.

If you, your business or church or another organization would like to help with these projects or needs at The Armstrong House, you can contact the Witts at 850-676-4114.
