President Donald Trump and his wife visited Florida on Monday, October 15, 2018 to survey the damage, visiting the City of Lynn Haven, just north of Panama City, Florida.
Trump said, ‘The storm was like a very wide, extremely wide, tornado’, and was surprised at the large trees were ripped from the ground . ‘This is really incredible’, he said on Monday.
The president and first lady helped distribute bottled water and chatted with attendees, along with Florida Governor Rick Scott.
With widespread damage, Bay County, Florida school officials say they have no idea when 26,000 students will return to class.
‘I would say every single school in Bay County has some type of damage, some more extensive than others’, said Steve Moss, Vice Chair of Bay District School Board.
Much of Marianna, Florida and Jackson County suffered damage from Hurricane Michael, even nearly 60 miles from the coastline and landfall.
The storm ripped off roofs, destroyed brick buildings and knocked down trees and power lines. Electricity was out for the entire county, and the water system stopped working.
More than 250 people remain in Jackson County shelters, and power remained out to nearly 80 percent of the county’s homes and businesses Tuesday morning, according to PowerOutage.us.
