WASHINGTON,D.C.–Former Chipola College baseball pitcher Patrick Corbin, has signed asix-year, $140 million deal with the Washington Nationals.
Corbinplayed at Chipola in 2009. He was drafted by the Angels and debuted in the MLBfor the Diamondbacks in 2012. He was an All-Star selection in 2018 and 2013 and
pitched for the National League in the MLB All-Star game.
The29-year-old was 11-7 for the Diamondbacks in this, his best season, with a 3.15ERA. He pitched 200 innings this season for the second time in his career. Thelefty set a career high in strikeouts (246) with a devastating slider. Corbinjoins a Nationals rotation that already boasts three-time Cy Young Award winnerMax Scherzer and three-time All-Star Stephen Strasburg.
ESPNbaseball analyst Tim Kurjkan calls Corbin, “The best starting pitcher freeagent on the market.”
Corbin wasin line to be the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day starter in 2014, coming off anAll-Star season in which he went 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA and 178 strikeouts in hisfirst full season. But he suffered an injury to his throwing arm during aspring training game and had to have Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire2014 season and part of 2015, and he went 5-13 with a 5.15 ERA in 2016. He wasmoved to the bullpen that
year.
