Released by the League of women Voters Florida —–

On Wednesday the League of Women Voters Florida sent the following letter to the office of Governor Ron DeSantis regarding his issuing of Executive Order 19-12.

Dear Governor DeSantis,

The League of Women Voters of Florida would like to offer our appreciation for your issuing on January 10th of Executive Order 19-12 — which directed state agencies to protect and preserve Florida’s water resources and appropriated $2.5 billion towards restoration and protection of water resources — as well as your decisive actions to make qualified appointments to executive positions.

These environmental actions will not only help Florida’s water, but will enhance tourism, support outdoor recreation, and protect our natural resources that depend on our water.

Your order also calls for the Department of Environmental Protection “to adamantly oppose all offshore oil and gas activities . . . and hydraulic fracturing in Florida.”

The League vigorously opposes offshore seismic exploration. We also oppose hydraulic fracturing along with matrix acidizing, which risks our water supply, generates dangerous waste, and creates environmental damage.

We encourage Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to follow suit and develop a water policy for Florida’s farmers and growers that reflects your intentions. Coordinated action is necessary to effectively protect Florida’s waters, using already-existing policies such as the Basin Management Action Plans and Best Management Practices. These programs are critical steps to protect our water resources.

We support your actions to protect our state’s environment and look forward to meeting with you in the future.

Regards,

Patricia Brigham
President, LWV of Florida
