School Board applauds students’ achievements ………………..

Monday night’s meeting of the Washington County School Board led off honoring student achievements and school board members were the first to applaud as trophies, certificates and recognitions were handed out.

The first award winning entries were displayed by the Vernon High School Jr. BETA and BETA programs

Sabrina Woods, co-sponsor of the VHS Beta Club, said the club members traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in various catagories and congratulated the following students who placed at the State Convention:

  • 2nd place in Fiber Arts – Brock Hodges
  • 2nd place in Digital Art – Keirsten Seal
  • 1st place in Language Arts – Leigh Vaught
  • 1st place in Performing Arts – River Basigner
  • 2nd place in Freshman Problem Solving – Team members Grace Quinn, Cherish Johns, Tristen Rodriguez and Jonathan Ray.
  • 1st place in Banner – Team members Bella Hall, Nick Sheffield, Karlee and Kelley Coleman, Zarah Dernbach and Sammie Martin.

These students are eligible to attend the National Beta Convention which will be held in Oklahoma City at the end of June.


District Spelling Bee winners were also recognized:

  • RMS 7th Grader Christian Hildebrand, 3rd Place
  • KMS 5th Grader Callie Hicks, 2nd Place
  • KMS 5th Grader Lane Pelfrey, 1st Place

Teacher of the Year awards were presented by Nicole Barfield and Brandon Lovering to:

  • 2010 Teacher of the Year – Tami Porter Parish of Vernon Middle School.
  • 2019 Rookie Teacher of the Year – Kaylor Collins of Kate Smith Elementary School.
  • 2019 School-Related Employee of the Year – Florida Panhandle Technical College.

Chipley High School FBLA District Award Winners included:

  • 1st Place : Business Law – Brennan Louderback; Client Services – Elizabeth Kiwalabye; Economics – Jabriya Hargrove; Health Care Administration – Ariana Jett; Networking Concepts – Aliyah Ulmer; Organizational Leadership – Kaytlin Adams; and Personal Finance – MacKenna Gainer.
  • 2nd Place :   Accounting – Jarvis Davis; Business Calculations – Anori Hixon; Cyber Security – Joey Jordan; Economics – Amari Carswell; Intro to Business Procedures – Adriayanna White; Intro to Informational Technology – Abby Chomos; Journalism – Olivia Floyd; and Organizational Leadership – Cara Haddan.
  • 3rd Place: Advertising – Karleigh Walters; Business Calculations; – Hanna Gidney; Health Care Administration – Cassidy Boyett; Journalism – Elijah Wells; and Personal Finance – Ella Page.

Chipley FFA had a big day at District 1 competition.

  • Audrey Holley placed 1st in the FFA Creed Contest and will represent Chipley FFA at the 91st State FFA Convention State Competition in Orlando in June.
  • John Taylor placed 2nd in Prepared Public Speaking.

The Sunshine State Scholar award was presented to Kayla Kindelspire by Washington County School Superintendent Joe Taylor.


Taylor also presented AVID Certifications to Vernon and Chipley High Schools.
