‘We are proud of the changes and improvements we have made in our recreation program’, said Vernon, Florida City Council Chair Gary Owens on Friday evening, March 29, 2019 at the Vernon SportsPlex at the inaugural meeting of the Vernon Recreation Board, as plans for the 2019 Dixie Youth Baseball, T-Ball and Softball programs.
The SportsPlex, located at 3232 Moss Hill Road in Vernon, Florida will be the site for the Opening Day of the 2019 Season of Softball, Tee Ball and Baseball, on Saturday, April 13, and the community has come together to support this celebration of youth and sportsmanship, as seen in these photos from the 2018 season by Real Florida Media, a subsidiary of The Goulding Agency in Chipley, Florida.
‘There have been a lot of hours put in by volunteers for this endeavor’, said Washington County Commissioner Tray Hawkins, speaking about the Vernon sports program, and his company has donated time and materials, along with County crews, to put the finishing touches on cleanup work at the SportsPlex facility many times over the past several years.
Revitalized by Recreation Director Brent Gibson, the Vernon sports programs have suffered in the past, as in any small municipalities, from lack of interest and loss of numbers of participants.
‘The newly reorganized Recreation Board will be helpful in providing oversight to the program, says Brent Gibson, Recreation Director for Vernon, ‘and this year we are making an effort to keep the programs fresh and we are happy with the results so far’.
