Chipley Kiwanis Club President Lemerle Fietsma welcomes the club’s newest member, Dan Micthell, to Tuesday’s meeting.

Club members presented four scholarships to Washington County School Superintendent Joe Taylor.  The four new $1,000 scholarships are being presented to – Lana Allys Bush, Megan Ruth McDonnell, Abby Rae Sapp, and Trevor Garrison Hartzog.

Washington County Extension Agent Matt Orwat presented Tuesday’s program, on ‘Beekeeping in the Florida Panhandle’.

Orwat said while there are now over 550,000 bee colonies,  that wasn’t originally the case when bees were first introduced to the new world in the 1500’s when the Spanish brought over honey bees to pollinate the fruit trees that were being introduced.

“The Spanish brought the bees that we now count on for honey,” noted Orwat.

According to Orwat, there are now more than 4,500 registered bee keepers in Florida alone raising the naturalized species.
