David Corbin, owner of Chipley Gun & Pawn in Chipley, told his fellow Kiwanians there is no longer the perceived stigma attached to entering a pawn shop that there was at one time.

David Corbin,  himself a member of the Chipley Kiwanis Club, was guest speaker at Tuesday’s club meeting and took a few moments to update his audience regarding the changes that have taken place in the pawnbrokering business.

Chipley Gun & Pawn is located at 1222 Jackson Avenue in downtown Chipley and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Corbin said one of the things he wants the public to understand is that pawnbrokers can’t base loans on what an individual paid for the items originally.  Loans are based on the age of the item someone is trying to pawn, along with its condition, and what upgrades have come along since the item was manufactured.

Corbin said another concern for pawnbrokers is not getting stuck with stolen items.  He said his shop carefully keeps complete records on all items received and was proud that  Chipley Gun & Pawn has a record of taking less than one percent of items that turn out to be stolen.

Questioned about how long items are pawned for, Corbin said by Florida Law items are held for 60 days before they belong to the shop and are ultimately available for sale.  However, he also pointed out that 65-70 percent of individuals who pawn items pick them back up before the 60 days run out.

However, pawned items aren’t the only items available at Chipley Gun & Pawn as shown in the photos below.
