PANAMA CITY, Fla. – All low-income households in Comcast’s Panhandle service area are now eligible for Internet Essentials as a part of the biggest expansion in the program’s history. Internet Essentials is the nation’s largest, most comprehensive and most successful broadband adoption program.

Launched in 2011 to bridge the digital divide, Internet Essentials provides low-cost, high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month plus tax, the option to purchase an Internet-ready computer for less than $150 and multiple options to access free digital literacy training in print, online, and in person.

Any household in Comcast’s service area across the Florida Panhandle that participates in one of more than a dozen government assistance programs, including Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), is now eligible for Internet Essentials. A full list of these programs can be found at www.internetessentials.com.

Comcast was already accepting applications from households that have a student eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program, live in public housing or receive HUD Housing Assistance, including Section 8 vouchers, or participate in the Veterans Pension Program.

Comcast estimates that nearly three million additional low-income households are now eligible to apply.  This number includes nearly 360,000 residents across the state of Florida, which is ranked second in the nation in terms of overall participation in the program.

Since starting the Internet Essentials program in August 2011, Comcast has connected more than eight million low-income individuals to the Internet at home, most for the very first time, including nearly 880,000 in the state of Florida.
