HOLMES COUNTY – An organized scam involving victims from several states has resulted in thousands of dollars being returned to victims across the country, including a senior citizen in Holmes County.

An elderly Holmes County resident recently reported to her pastor that she thought she had been the victim of a scam. The pastor then contacted the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

A Sheriff’s Office investigator located the recipient of the victim’s money in Manheim Township, Pennsylvania and solicited assistance from the municipality’s police department.

The joint investigation led to the recovery of thousands of dollars of U.S. currency and other evidence which has been turned over to federal authorities with the United States Postal Service for criminal prosecution.

Sheriff John Tate states these scams usually target the community’s seniors.

“Please be aware that scammers are victimizing out most vulnerable citizens,” said Sheriff Tate. “Just remember if someone you don’t know is asking you for money, contact local law enforcement before you send them anything.”
