Released by the Office of Jimmy Patronis   ….

Floridians,

This week, I had the honor of being appointed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Advisory Council (NAC) by Acting Administrator Pete Gaynor. The NAC is an advisory committee established by federal law to ensure effective and ongoing coordination of federal emergency management activities.

As a fourth-generation Floridian, I know the importance of emergency preparedness and management to ensure the safety and success of all Floridians. I’m looking forward to advising FEMA on important disaster response and recovery issues, especially financial and insurance matters. I will continue to advocate for measures aimed at streamlining the reimbursement process of federal assistance to communities impacted by disasters, a vital part of the recovery process.

After seeing firsthand, the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Michael, I know that building relationships with our federal partners in Washington is important to ensuring Florida is prepared to recover quickly from the next disaster that takes aim at the Sunshine State.

Also, we are closely monitoring current tropical activity in the Gulf of Mexico. I encourage all Floridians to heed all watches and warnings and listen to local officials as this storm develops. Follow these important tips below to prepare for possible heavy rain and wind:

  • Take photos of items in your home to help make the recovery process easier.
  • Use sandbags and plastic sheeting to protect against rising water.
  • Secure or bring in outdoor objects, such as grills and lawn furniture.
  • Gather all insurance, financial and other important documents and secure them in plastic bags.

Stay safe Florida,
