Tuesday night was a time of celebration at Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley as women of alla ges gathered to direct attention to the fight against breast cancer.
Detect It! Treat It! Defeat It!!
This was the message put forth by guest speakers Dr. Leisa H. Bailey and Kathy Verenes.
Nothing that “breast cancer is an emotional topic for women,” Dr. Bailey added, “breasts are really only a small part of what a woman is.”
Stressing that breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United State, Bailey said 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year, but added those numbers have gone down over the last ten years.
Reminding those in attendance to get their annual mammogram, Bailey said there is a 95 percent survival rate if breast cancer is detected early.
Kathy Verenes, herself a ten year breast cancer survivor, told listeners that cancer survivors should “never quit”. She recommended “just get up every morning, put on your best face, and get moving.”
Verenes also stressed the need to “appreciate the little things in life,” “remember that each day is a gift,” and “always find the humor.”
