President’s Point: November 2019
Thanks for all of the good fortune we share and thanks to everyone who has contributed so significantly to help make the work we do at Elder Care more meaningful and much more enjoyable.
As we close the books on October and our 21st, and arguably most successful, Oktoberfest, I think about all the factors that made up this especially fun fundraiser. It was because of our dedicated staff and talented kitchen crew, the incredible leadership of our Directors, the amazing support of our volunteers and last but clearly not least … the commitment of our loyal and benevolent sponsors.
Elder Care Services is proud to announce that our 21st Annual Oktoberfest was a great success! The night featured a number of unique brews that were being served for the very first time, a tasty display of authentic German food, an alluring silent auction, live entertainment and a gallery of fun games for everyone’s enjoyment!
We were joined by a large and diverse group from our community, and netted just over $100K! These proceeds will directly support our core programs that will help improve the lives of thousands of seniors in the coming year.
We would all like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our loyal sponsors – this event could not have been possible without you!
Become an Elder Elf!
Throughout the year, we strive to help seniors with the necessities – food, a bath and trips to the doctor. Those that we help are often on very low fixed incomes and simply have nothing to spare to celebrate the holidays. That’s why every December, we’re excited to host our Elder Elf program!
Elder Elf is an annual event where we invite businesses, civic organizations, and individuals to partner with us to bring holiday cheer to seniors in need. In most cases these seniors would not receive gifts during the holidays if it were not for our generous community acting as holiday “elves.”
If you are interested in participating, please complete the form linked below. Special requests are also available for group gifts.
Please join us in making spirits bright this holiday season for our seniors!

Cyclists Stick Together
Every Monday a group of Meals on 2 Wheels volunteers donate their time to our nutrition program by delivering hot meals to seniors on their bicycles. During one of those Monday morning deliveries, a client informed them that his bike had been stolen from in front of his apartment.
The group was saddened to learn of his misfortune, as they knew he used his bike quite often to get around town. Springing into action, they pooled their funds and purchased the client a refurbished bike from Joe’s Bicycle Shop. In addition to it being a major upgrade, it also gave him a great connection to Joe’s Bicycle Shop for any future repairs! The client was overcome with emotion and so very thankful for our caring volunteers.
Thank you to the Meals on 2 Wheels group (Ken Schilling, Roger Holdener, Kelley El-Urfali, Mike Redig, and Marieanne Luber) for this selfless act of kindness. It’s because of people like you that we are able to do what we do for Big Bend seniors and their caregivers!
