Today, I was humbled to honor the life and legacy of our fallen firefighters at the 2019 Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service in Ocala. Becoming a firefighter isn’t a job — it’s a calling. These heroes go into this profession knowing there are unknown risks and dangers. They make a choice to set aside their personal safety, time, and family to protect others and they do it with a courage and commitment that leaves a lasting impact on the entire world around them.
In my time as your State Fire Marshal, I have quickly learned that there is no such thing as a routine fire call. Every call is different. Every call offers unique challenges, and each unfortunately brings unforeseen dangers. And yet these heroes willingly put on the uniform.
To the families who have lost a beloved firefighter — there are no words to replace their presence. I hope that today, in some small way, shows our gratitude for these heroes who went too soon. I’m forever humbled to honor the memory of those who gave their lives to protect our communities. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
