Floridians,

It’s hard to believe that 2019 has almost come to a close! I am so grateful for what we’ve accomplished this year and I look forward to continuing our work for the great state of Florida!

As State Fire Marshal, fire safety is a top priority for me. I have some startling statistics to share with you—roughly three out of every five fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. Dead batteries caused a reported 25% of smoke alarm failures.

New Years Fire Safety

This New Year’s Day, check your fire alarms and make sure they are all working properly. This simple step can alert you if a fire emergency happens in your home. Having properly installed and maintained smoke alarms can drastically reduce the risk of tragedies related to structure fires.

Top Smoke Alarm Tips for a Safe 2020

  1. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month (or more frequently if directed by the manufacturer).
  2. Use interconnected alarms; when one alarm sounds, these systems will sound each connected alarm.
  3. Install smoke alarms inside and outside of every bedroom and make sure you have an alarm on every level of your home.
  4. You need to replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. It’s best to always follow the manufacture date recommendations.

Have a wonderful holiday and happy New Year! Looking forward to an amazing 2020!

Sincerely,
