Members of the Washington County Historical Society welcomed several guests to their January meeting and suggested everyone use 2020 to start building a recorded history of their own families.
Guest speakers for last Friday’s meeting were Elder Jensen and Elder Alder from the LDS Church in Bonifay and the men encouraged those researching their family histories to go on the LDS-supported site familysearch.org to begin their work.
Handing out work sheets, Jensen and Alder encouraged listeners to begin building their personal family tree by filling in the names of their parents, grandparents, siblings and other family members so their children and grandchildren will have that information.
They also suggested Ancestry and Find-A-Grave web sites be utilized when doing family history searches.
During the business portion of Friday’s meeting, Historical Society members were encouraged to look around their homes for even small items that help tell the story of Washington County.
Historical Society president Dorothy Odom says those items, while they may no longer mean as much to you, they can be exhibited at the Historical Society Museum in Chipley to help tell the story of the county to visitors. Donation of items is always appreciated.
The Historical Society Museum is open every Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and visitors are always welcome.
