In recognition of 2020 Florida Arbor Day, Chipley Garden Club was proud to donate a “truckload” of native plants to our own Falling Waters State Park. After consulting with Bill Maphis of Maphis Nursery, the club donated two 7’ tall Eastern Redbud, and six native azaleas in assorted colors.
The Redbuds will be covered with small clusters of magenta flowers in the spring and the heart-shaped leaves are beautiful. The native azaleas will produce blooms in yellow, orange and pink even before their green leaves come out.
Club President Debbie Mitchell remarked, “Hurricane Michael hit the park pretty hard and club members felt the addition of blooming native plants would be a great way to celebrate Florida Arbor Day.”
Park Manager Aaron Miller stated, “The garden club members have been very supportive of Falling Waters State Park. Last year they donated the birch tree and native azaleas which were planted directly behind the gate house. They also maintain the Joyce Carter Butterfly Garden which is located in the picnic area.”
