Town of Wausau, Florida Cancels Meetings, Use of Municipal Facilities Including Possum Palace and Town Hall, Effective Immediately

In a special monthly meeting of the Wausau, Florida Town Council on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, the Wausau Town Council voted to suspend all Town meetings as well as use of the Possum Palace and other Town meeting areas until further notice.

Citing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ advice concerning the COVID-19 virus health issues, as well as actions taken by other local municipalities, discussion resulted in the vote to close facilities and cancel town meetings until further notice.

The meeting, also called to approve the low bid from D&B Builders in Panama City for construction of a new Wausau Fire Station, was attended by all Council members except Councilwoman Judy Carter.

A vote was also called on closing the Wausau Town Offices to the public, effective Wednesday, March 25. 2020, and that motion also passed unanimously.

The next tentatively scheduled workshop is set for May 7, with the next Council Meeting on May 14, 2020, but these will be changed if necessary.

In a follow-up letter to the residents of Wausau, the Council sent the following:

The Mayor and Council Members would like to take this time to thank you our residents for your support and commitment to our Town. As the elected board of your community we want to assure you that we are taking the COVID-19 virus very seriously. As a Council we have closed the Town Hall to the public effective March 25th the staff will still be available by phone, text, or email. If you need to make a payment please utilize the drop box, online banking, or mail. We will continue to take cash payments with the Clerk coming to your vehicle to receive the payments. If you need other services such as fax, copying, or notary please come to the town hall and we will come out to you. Thank you for your understanding. There will be no change in billing, due dates, or other services of the water system. Garbage service will remain on the same schedule. We are at this time postponing the April scheduled meetings till May. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will act accordingly. We encourage you to call, text, or utilize our Facebook page for updates. At this time our parks are still open however, we ask you to follow the social distancing guidelines. Ball season is on hold we will notify you when the situation changes.
