Haney Technical Prepares Students for Maritime Manufacturing Welding

Northwest Florida has a thriving maritime manufacturing industry, employing nearly 5,000 individuals within a one-hour drive time of the region, according to Economic Modeling, LLC. Local ship and boat builders manufacture products from small fishing boats to offshore construction vessels. For instance, Eastern Shipbuilding in Panama City, received a contract to build the US Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutters, generating nearly 2,000 additional maritime manufacturing jobs in Northwest Florida.

To meet the growing demands in this particular industry sector, Haney Technical Center in Panama City is preparing welders to work in a range of industries from energy production to shipbuilding. Haney Technical Center utilizes input from local industry experts and teaches a Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) curriculum to train welders for jobs that exist today. Partnerships with local manufacturers is the key to success. To ensure students are meeting the needs of industry, Haney Technical has developed an apprenticeship program with Eastern Shipbuilding to provide students with a maritime industry specific training of orbital tube welding. Local maritime manufacturers like Eastern Shipbuilding hire many of these students upon graduation from the Haney Technical welding program.
