It’s out with the old and in with the new as the Dothan City School board approved a new dress code policy for the new year.
The change comes after Dr. Dennis Coe became acting superintendent, he suggested to the board revisiting the recommendation from the committee.
The current dress code requires students to wear uniforms, khakis or black and blue pants with a solid polo or button down shirt but the new code will allow students to wear jeans with any t-shirt if appropriate.
Students are still able to wear uniforms but the new changes allow for some flexibility. The board hopes the new change will cut down on dress code related referrals.
“That the new change and the revised dress code will not go in a negative direction for sure. Our secondary principals really wanted it to happen because they do see several students being reprimanded that may be slightly out of dress code. Student learning is our primary goal and so as many students that we can keep inside the classroom, to be taught, that’s our goal,” Darius McKay, director of safety security and attendance for Dothan City Schools said.
The new dress code policy will go into effect starting January 5, 2021.
