Is this a sign of things to come as COVID dictates our lives? This from the Holmes County, Florida School District:
On Friday, January 15, 2021, Holmes District Schools will be having a “work from home” day for both students and teachers.
The purpose of this day is to give an opportunity to practice navigating our distance learning platforms from home. Just as we practice fire drills and bus evacuations, we need to practice the transition to remote learning should the need arise.
As part of the guidance for school reopening, the Florida Department of
Education strongly suggested that we hold at least one of these practice “work from home” days each year. We know that there may be some challenges, but we will use those as opportunities to improve.
The lessons and assignments presented on the “work from home” day will be asynchronous. There will be NO live class sessions with your student’s teacher(s).
Grades K-5 These students will NOT be taking devices home and working on Friday. Instead, they will practice in the classroom on Thursday, January 14.
Students will access a lesson in either Canvas or Google Classroom, and complete the lesson and assignment with their teacher’s assistance. This will be a simple assignment. Our goal is to get the students used to navigating through lessons and completing an assignment in one of the online learning platforms.
Grades 6-12 These students will truly work from home on January 15 using either their school-issued device or a personal device. Each teacher will be assigning a lesson and SIMPLE assignment in Canvas. This lesson should be completed before the student returns to school on Tuesday. Depending on the assignment, it may be that the student downloads the assignment to their computer before leaving school on Thursday, completes it, and
then uploads it upon return to school. This may vary from teacher to teacher.
Attendance In Grades 6-12, if a student does not submit the assignment, either over the weekend or by the time they come a teacher’s class on Tuesday and have a chance to log in to their device and upload it, they will be counted absent. They will not be allowed time to actually complete the assignment on Tuesday; it should be completed in advance and simply
submitted on Tuesday if unable to submit over the weekend.
Tech Support If your student has trouble finding the assignment in the learning platform or has questions about the content or instructions for the assignment, please email your child’s teacher.
If a student has a problem with the operation of their computer, such as logging in, connecting to the Internet, etc., contact the HDSB Help Desk at 547-1000 or helpdesk@hdsb.org. Email is the preferred and most efficient way to receive help, as multiple technicians will be responding to emails. Please include a contact number in case the technician needs to speak with you.
Please be sure that your student brings their computer and charger back to school with them on Tuesday. They will need their devices for class!
