Manny Pacquiao has opened up on Conor McGregor’s stunning defeat at the hands of Dustin Poirier at UFC 257, and offered up an explanation as to why ‘The Notorious’ lost
Manny Pacquiao believes Conor McGregor lost to Dustin Poirier because he underestimated the American.
McGregor was stopped in the second round of his UFC return last weekend after being dominated by Poirier.
The ‘Notorious’ started well, and recovered well after being taken down early in the fight.
Poirier looked to utilize his wrestling ability and scored an early takedown before butchering McGregor with a series of leg kicks.
McGregor failed to check any of them, and was ultimately left unable to move around the cage and avoid Poirier, who stormed him and knocked him out in the second round.
The result was a stark contrast to their first meeting, which ended within just minutes of the first round.
The pair met in 2014, with McGregor winning via knockout.
And Pacquiao believes the Irishman was too confident going into their second fight and underestimated Poirier.
The four-time welterweight champion has been tipped to fight McGregor, but the Poirier fight has raised questions over whether that will happen now.
And Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News, via Marca, that he believes ‘The Notorious’ will know how to get over the defeat.
“Losing is part of the game,” Pacquiao said.
“In sport there are winners and losers, that’s all.
“It is not about defeat, but about how you accept defeat in your life: how you get over that difficult time in your life.
“McGregor had already beaten his rival before and I think that made him underestimate him.”
