Republican Group Calls For Northwest Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz to Resign on Billboards in Pensacola

By | February 5, 2021

Northwest Florida Congressman Rep. Matt Gaetz is making national headlines for defending former president Donald Trump and standing by allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

But a Republican PAC is fighting back against Gaetz’s claims.

Multiple billboards encouraging Gaetz to resign have been spotted across Northwest Florida. They read: “You lied about the election. The election was attacked. Rep. Gaetz: Resign”

It’s part of the Republican Accountability Project’s $1,000,000 campaign asking GOP lawmakers to resign following their actions since the 2020 election. They put up similar signs against Ted Cruz in Texas.

On Wednesday, Gaetz himself expressed interest in resigning to defend Trump in his upcoming second impeachment trial. He spoke about it on Trump ally Steve Bannon’s podcast.

Channel 3 reached out to Gaetz for comment on this matter — as well as several other topics in recent months — but haven’t heard back for an interview.

His office did send Channel 3 a statement Thursday afternoon, saying:

‘The people of America understand that the policies of President Trump have made their lives better. The legacy of President Trump will get better with age, just like a fine wine’.

With Gaetz on the frontlines of defending the former president — even holding a rally in Wyoming last week against Liz Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump — how is he representing the Northwest Florida community and people of District 1?

According to the site govtrack.us, Gaetz introduced the third fewest bills compared to Florida legislation before the session ended in January. He was also the 25th most absent member of Congress, missing 12% of votes since January 2019.

Gaetz’s most recent sponsored bill was nearly eight months ago, prohibiting the use of federal funds to purchase Chinese drones. His most notable bill was two weeks prior, when the congressman proposed suspending funds to the U.S. Soccer Federation for allowing players to kneel for the National Anthem.

He didn’t receive a single co-sponsor for either one. And not one of Congressman Gaetz’s sponsored bills in 2020 have directly impacted District 1.

Gaetz defeated Democratic candidate Phil Ehr in November for the Florida Dist. 1 Representative seat.
