The four people killed in the Tuesday morning traffic crash on County 388 have been identified as a local family.
According to Whit Majors, director of operations and chief investigator for the District 14 Medical Examiner’s Office, the victims were Linda Barfield, 68, Tracey Barfield, 48, Stacey Barfield, 52, and Christy Barfield, 51. All were Panama City residents except Tracey, who was from Chipley.
Majors, who didn’t know where the group was headed, added that Linda Barfield was the mother of sons Tracey and Stacey. Christy was Tracey’s wife.
The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on County 388, about 2 to 3 miles west of State 77, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
It’s believed the Barfields were headed east on 388 when their car drifted into the opposite lane and collided with a pickup truck. Majors didn’t know the name of the pickup’s driver, who was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Majors said Linda, Stacey and Christy Barfield were pronounced dead at the scene, while Tracey Barfield died after being transported to a local hospital.
“Preliminary investigation shows that seat belts were most likely not used,” FHP spokesman Lt. Jason King said Tuesday following the wreck.
