March is Florida Archaeology Month!

“Look to the past to inform the future,” the bird and heart symbols here represent the concept of “Sankofa” from the Akan people of West Africa. The bird moves forward while looking back to grab an egg that represents the wisdom of the past. In the same way, learning from history can help inform a positive present and bright future. Florida’s African American Cemeteries are sacred spaces where families can memorialize their loved ones, but also places full of history to inspire and engage younger generations.

This year, Florida Archaeology Month celebrates the historic places and people who made Florida what it is today, and presents African American cemeteries as places to learn about these important and inspiring stories. Check out the Florida Archaeology Month website to find historic cemeteries to visit near you, or related events going on in your area.

You can get a copy of this year’s poster at our events in March or by visiting the Destination Archaeology Resource Center!

SCUBA Instructor? Dive into FPAN’s Heritage
Awareness Diving Seminar

This May, FPAN Northwest staff will be traveling to the Florida Keys to conduct the annual Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar (HADS)! HADS is geared toward SCUBA professionals and is intended to explain the advantage of conserving shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources, not only to preserve information about our

collective past, but also to preserve the vibrant ecosystems that grow around shipwrecks.

If you are interested in joining us or want to learn more, visit our HADS workshop page or contact Nicole Grinnan via e-mail or at 850-595-0050, ext. 103.
