A 91-year-old Ohio man is recovering in the hospital after he was mistakenly given two COVID-19 vaccines in one day.
Both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines require two doses to be fully effective, but users are supposed to take the doses three weeks apart.
However, a mix-up allowed Victor Smith to be administered two doses of the vaccine in the same day.
His body went into shock in response to what doctors believe was a “vaccine overdose.”
While at the rehab facility, Smith was scheduled to get his second vaccine dose on February 25 at the Butler County Fairgrounds.
Theodore told WLWT that her father was transported there to get his shot and then returned back to the rehab facility. He was fully vaccinated and “was good,” his daughter said.
That’s when the mix-up happened. Later that day, Theodore said a city firefighter came to the rehab facility and said he had a vaccine for “Victor.” The nurse asked if it was for Victor Smith, and the firefighter said yes.
They had the wrong Victor.
Victor Smith then received his second coronavirus vaccine within one day, and it was his third coronavirus vaccine overall.
Smith later revealed to his daughter that he was given a second vaccine that day.
The City of Hamilton and Community First Solutions said in part, “An incident occurred where a city of Hamilton resident inadvertently received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on the same day.
Both Jamestowne and the city of Hamilton fire department have begun investigations into the incident.”
It’s unclear whether Smith received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
