Started in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run was created by Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon to help law enforcement be active in the community and support Special Olympics Kansas.
Washington County, Florida Law Enforcement agencies have participated in the event each year, and on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, residents in Chipley saw members from several law enforcement and correctional agencies participate in the Torch Run, which started at 8AM at the Washington County Courthouse and progressed along Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 77 south to People’s South Bank.
Arguably one of the largest Law Enforcement and Corrections schools in the region, Florida Panhandle Technical College has always participated in the event and this year is no exception, as seen in these contributed photos from this morning’s event.
Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into Opening Ceremonies of local competitions.
